So just what currently is the best Xbox exclusive??
Argue all you want, but exclusive games to consoles do matter! They are one of the deciding factors for consumers to choose between one company or another. I have lost count of the amount of times a friend of mine has bought a console and asked me as a reviewer of games, “ So what games would you recommend i get first ?”
This is a totally non researched, going with my gut, slightly humorous take on this answer. Don’t shoot me!!! Snowflakes who don’t like anything bad said about their favourite game series, walk away now before it hurts! 🙂
For me, when friends come round and i want to “show off” each system I have, I look for the exclusives to show them. My Playstation buddies come over, I show them Forza,Gears, and others. My Xbox mates arrive, I show them GT Sport, Uncharted, Yakuza and others. All of them I also show them what a magnificent piece of kit the Switch is too with Zelda and Splatoon 🙂
However, when my Xbox mates ask me what’s the best exclusive, I pause. It’s not that the Xbox lacks exclusives, and i’m not going to discuss which console has better exclusive games, I pause because i can’t make my mind up just what is the best Xbox exclusive ? Just how do you choose which one is best anyway ?
It’s all subjective to the person what genre of game is their favourite. Some prefer racing games to shooters etc, but here is my humble opinion as a player who enjoys all types of genre, which one is best.
I’ve been playing video games since the early 80’s and I’d like to think my 38 years of experience playing them helps, and for me the key factors that make a game good, are simply its overall quality, the different experience each game gives and it’s fun factor. So who are the contenders ?
Player 1 – Halo. Let’s start with a biggy. Is the last Halo game or the Halo MCC the best Xbox exclusive ? Nope. Now before the fanboys berate me, Halo Guardians is undoubtedly a good game, but does it do anything you can’t get in other games like Destiny, Call of Duty etc ? No. You can most certainly get the same sort of experience in other games like you can in the Halo universe and Halo doesn’t do anything better than the rest, it’s just different. You can not deny it’s popularity and the place Halo holds in the hearts of it’s fanatical fans, but at the moment, it is just another shooter in the sea of MANY shooters out there.
Player 2 – Forza 7. This game is most certainly not lacking stunning visuals or popularity, but you don’t have to dig too deep to find the online petrol heads have a hard time agreeing on what the best racing game on the Xbox is. Forza 7, Project Cars or Assetto Corsa ? Hard not to agree Forza 7 has a wealth of content and following which counts for something, but it’s not the only fish in the racing sim / driving scene and can’t pull itself away from the pack let alone claim the best of the console title.
Player 3 – Gears of War. Unique gaming experience, most certainly! Big following, definitely, Stunning looking game, oh yes. Have we a winner then ? mmmm Close but no cigar. I’ve got an eclectic mix of friends on my xbox, and i struggle to find more than one or two playing gears constantly like i see them play other games. It’s certainly got a great mix of single player, co-op and mp, so ticks a lot of boxes, just i feel the best of gears has happened in the past, and the series is running by the same old same old numbers now.
Player 4 – Sea of Thieves – Just no… moving on.
Player 5 – Ori and the Blind Forest and Cuphead – I think we are onto something here. These two Indie game add up to one big triple A hitter when together. There is DEFINITELY no games like them on any other system, they are total quality and well made games, in short they are definite contenders. Just can you give the title of best console exclusive to an Indie game that people will only play once??
Player 6 – PUBG. This game had it going, the hype train was deserving and real, it was going to be something new and fresh and big. It could just about weather it’s shaky launch, until, Fortnite…..
Player 7 – Honourable mentions.
RYSE, could have been something great ( it still can ) and was in fact the reason I bought an Xbox launch day and not a PS4. I personally loved the game but even I could see it’s flaws. Develop it some more, this could be something special though.
Quantum Break – Has the MS / Remedy games love affair finished ? I was hoping SO much this would be the game to make me forgive Remedy for not making a true Alan Wake sequel, but alas it wasn’t. It’s still a very good game, just not quite Alan Wake good.
Recore – Again like Quantum break, offered and teased what could have been spectacular. I didn’t mind that it would be a smaller game as size isn’t everything ( Hellblade looking at you here, take a bow ) just, it didn’t have any narrative to speak of literally, to make this at all special and launch a whole new series. It got boring and repetitive, but fun, too quick.
So the winner is
Player 8 – Forza Horizon Series
For me the flagship game the console can get behind as being something special, unique, fun, accessible, and oozes quality, Forza Horizon it is. It’s amazing to think when the original Horizon came out the Forza fraternity were up in arms about what their beloved developer was doing! The nearest comparison for similar “experience” would be Driveclub but that is a PS exclusive. Both are excellent games, but for the Xbox at least, this is a quality ride, stunning visuals, exciting gameplay, and popular, to show off to your friends with when they want to see what your Xbox can do. Forza Horizon 3, take a bow.
