With video streaming becoming ever more popular through websites like Twitch and YouTube and multi device streaming now becoming available through Xbox and PlayStation, there is an ever-growing demand for microphones that can provide clarity along with multi device connectivity. This is where Turtle Beach have stepped up to the plate and produced the first multi device streaming mic. Of course, Turtle Beach has a history of providing us with headsets, sound cards and mics along with a partnership with Twitch, it was obvious that they would be the first ones!
The microphone itself is extremely lightweight and really small, it won’t take up too much desk space if you decide to use the mount provided, also, if you choose to mount the mic on a boom then the provided boom mount is easy to set up and not at all heavy. As this is a mic specifically built for console streaming it’s very handy that it has a mini USB cable port. If you already have a mic setup in place it’s easy and simple just to unplug your existing mic and plug in this new one! If you like the look of the mic and want to get one for yourself you are given 2 choices in colour, black or silver. Such choice! Much wow!
The one thing I would say about this mic is it’s all rounded versatility. It’s mainly marketed as a streaming mic for console players, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be used for other means! Whilst trialling this piece of hardware I could use it on my PC, my PS4 and on my laptop. This is particularly handy for people who stream regularly but also have YouTube channels on the side and even those who do narratives for audio books or animation. The mini USB cable can plug into any USB port in a device and be used with ease.
No matter whether you are streaming, recording for a YouTube video or simply playing a game, you must hear all the action with clarity. When streaming, you must make sure that you are keeping an eye on all audio levels so that your viewers aren’t missing out on any hilarious commentary from their streamer. The Turtle Beach Streaming Mic has an in-built 3.5mm headphone jack at the back (which most microphones have nowadays) which fits all headphones and doesn’t give any delay between the microphone input and output.
Now, the voice quality of any microphone is essential for a good streamer/YouTuber/anyone who uses a microphone to know. This microphone has inbuilt technology which picks up your voice with ease and it’s quite clear. However, outside of this review I own another microphone which is £20 more expensive that picks up my voice a lot clearer than the Turtle Beach one does. I noted that my voice sounded more “tinny” on the Turtle Beach mic, like when you put your phone in a glass to make it sound louder. But, for what you pay for this microphone I think it’s perfect for any streamer that uses consoles and wants to upgrade from using their webcam/headset mic!
Summary
After playing around with this mic for a few hours I concluded that for the price they’re asking, this mic is worth it. However, that is only because there are no other options out there for console streaming mics. Maybe when there are more options available more comparisons can be made for this specific mic type. But for now, I would hold off putting your hands in your pocket until another 2/3 mics of this type have been released. If you’re desperate to upgrade and you’re a streamer that uses consoles, then I’m not holding you back!
