Rich Leadbetter of Digital Foundry has been hands-on with the new Xbox behemoth.
In the video, Rich is testing various games’ performance compared to both Xbox One X and Xbox 360, and the results are astounding. There is a caveat to this, though, in that games that have a locked frame-rate will not see fps increases above their native restrictions, and will only see a notable difference if they frequently dip below their target frame rate.
Games with an unlocked frame rate, benefit hugely from the increased CPU and GPU grunt of the Series X, with many games that hovered around 40 fps now hitting an almost rock-solid 60 fps. Check out the video below:
As you can see, and to quote Rich, it’s transformative. Many current games already look very good, only let down by janky frame rate drops. The Series X will breath life into many existing games. Great news for anyone with a substantial backlog they are still working through.
Excitingly, Microsoft are talking up potential further improvements that their backwards compatibility team are working on, such as resolution increases and bumps up to 120 Hz for select games. Combined with auto-HDR (this is available depending on the results of the AI algorithm) we could be enjoying our Xbox One libraries for many years to come, with increased fidelity, frame rates and visual flourishes.
It’s exactly one month until the Xbox Series X|S launch date, and we can’t wait to put the new console through its paces.
