Sony will not be attending EGX this year, due to, for want of another way of saying it, they have nothing new to show. Doesn’t that scare you as a gamer ? They won’t be there because there aren’t enough new games to show !?!?!
Current consoles, later this year, will be 6 years old. Admittedly that is a long time, however, as a gamer there is one thing missing. Volume of games.
The reason there isn’t a volume of games is that the good ones now take multiple years to develop. God of War was 6 years, Red Dead 2 was 5 years thrashing the work force to death!
The reason they are taking longer to produce is because as the consoles are now more powerful, the devs want to harness the power they now have. So take that thought forward, doesn’t that mean if we get a more powerful PS5/XBox2, games will then take EVEN LONGER to make? Are you really going to be happy with that? I’d even go as far to argue they don’t even really know what to do with that power other than make the games look 4K pretty but still fill the games with the same stuff.
Developers praised the launch of the PS4 and Xb1 with quotes saying they now had the power to do what they always wanted to do that they couldn’t on the previous gen. However, it’s all very well having more power, but if we are only going to get one game per series, per generation of console, what’s the point ? I’d rather have less power and more games if I’m honest.
Examples are, we’ve had ONE god of war game on the PS4 in 6 years ( not including the HD remaster ) but had 2 new games on the PS3, and 4 HD remasters in the same time span. On the Xbox we’ve had 1 new Halo in 6 years. No one is saying these games are bad but 1 game in 6 years per series is a hell of a long time to wait for your favourite game.
‘I think one of the worst examples I can think of, and there are some series that haven’t even had one new game this generation of console ( The Last of Us, Splinter cell ) is one of my favourite series the Japanese JRPG Tales of. So far the ONLY new Tales of game current gen was Tales of Berseria. ( It’s brilliant if you haven’t played it ) There are two HD remasters also available, Tales of Zesteria and recently Tales of Vesperia too. However last gen there was not only Zesteria, and Vesperia, but 4 others available to play as well. That’s 6 Tales games in total of one series alone last gen, and just ONE so far this gen after 6 years of waiting. My patience is great but really, get a move on people! ( There is also the Tales of Hearts game on the PS Vita to make 7 if you want to include that one as well )
You could counter this with, ahh but there are new IP’s and other games as well, and yes there are, Horizon Zero Dawn, Rocket League, Titanfall, but not as many as you would think in 6 years. The reason is not only do new games now take 5 to 6 years to make, but they also cost a fortune to make too. If that game then fails the company will be in huge debt and probably go under. To avoid going into debt developers are mainly sticking to the same, tried and trusted version.
Quick question, name me a current gen game your playing that hasn’t got a number after it, or is the latest in a series of games. ……………. Eventually you’ll think of something your playing that is actually new, ( my guess is Fortnite or PUBG ) but my guess is it took you awhile to answer.
For me as a hardcore gamer since 2007, I’m finding I’m playing games on my old consoles ( PS3 and Xbox ) just as much as my current gen, simply to fill in the gaps while I wait for the next big current gen release. That’s because there simply isn’t the same library of games six years into this gen as there was 6 years into the last.
Add to this, I’m finding a lot of current gen games, repeats of either open world this, open world that, battle Royale, or latest edition of a long standing series. Frankly I’m bored. The variety of games last gen was fantastic, this gen, certainly not.
Where am I going with all this, well as an advert once said, power is nothing without control. What’s the point in having all this power in these consoles if it takes 5 to 6 years to get anything decent out of them now? Add to this if we will have more power in the PS5/Xb2 surely we’ll just get even longer development times too!
So we DON’T need new consoles, we need shorter development times and MORE GAMES, or as a GAMER, wanting to play new exciting GAMES on my GAMES console am i missing the point ?
