Another wired headset on a budget: Do we really need more?
Well apparently we do, the Recon 70 is another budget headset built for Battle Royale games, and much like other ones I’ve reviewed and as I’ve come to expect with Turtle Beach, it’s quality all round.
The headset itself is very light-weight and if I dare to critique the more expensive Pro headsets they can be a little on the heavy side – my son even asked for the Recon 70 back (he used the Pro ones whilst I was reviewing) and I asked him why, only to get the response that they are lighter and more comfortable.
Build quality for the small price you are paying is spot-on. Whilst kids will throw these around (mine were doing this a little) they have stood the test so far and from the build style compared to premium headsets you really can’t fault the design of them. The ear cushions are a little smaller than I am accustomed to but they are by no means small or uncomfortable. I would like to see a thicker cushion on the headband but that’s the only downfall.
Visually the red is very striking and it’s my personal favourite among the Recon 70 collection. Even the wire is red, and you can’t help but smile at that.
Sound quality is being delivered by 40mm neodymium magnets, and for the price they deliver a great sound even at high volume. I turned them all the way up and played a few drum and bass sets on them and whilst not perfect, the quality for the price was very good.
Being they are targeted and designed to appeal to the Battle Royale market, you can tell from the higher tones being delivered that it probably saved the speakers from the deep bass I was testing them on, but the clarity was still good even when turned up to the max.
Mic quality is almost synonymous with Turtle beach now and I won’t be surprising any of you by saying that the clarity of my voice in party chats was clear, loud and produced no echo.
SUMMARY
A quality multi-format headset for under £30 – tick, mission accomplished. If comfort, quality, and looks are what you want, then you need the Recon 70 headset, because for the price they are an amazing pair of headphones and you will be hard pressed to find a better performing pair of headphones in this price range.
