What can I say about a case? Surprisingly, a fair bit.
Most cases you would assume it’s just a piece of hardened fabric with a zip around it.
There are a lot of people out there who like Pokemon, but don’t want to walk around with a crazy, colourful, over the top case (which a lot of them are), as they are designed with the younger generation in mind. The PDP tonal cases actually have a design that will appeal to all ages. The whole case is black fabric with a semi-3D rubber design on the front that depicts Pikachu midway through an electric dash.
Here’s the trick though, everything bar the Pikachu is grayscale making it quite understated and a bit more sleek and less “loud” compared to a fair amount of comparable Pokemon-themed products. Other than that, this is a fairly standard case on the outside. It’s very minimalistic and small with a leather style fabric strap across the top and a metal Switch-branded zip (a subtle addition but attention to detail, in my opinion, is a sign of quality)
On the inside, however, it is far more clever. This case has been designed with compact size and travel in mind. It’s a nice and snug fit for the Switch, although if you, like me, have the PDP grips fitted, you will struggle to get your console in here.
The top is just empty space as you will find with most cases, however, the bottom houses possibly the smartest storage solution I have ever seen. It has a flap that has a net for headphones and cables and then six slots across the top for cartridges, secured with a strap that comes from the bottom, up the back of the flap, and then fastens with velcro to the front.
This strap is the best part; the case has a very tight fit around your console, but this strap goes around your Switch in such a way, that when you want to get it out you just pull on the strap and it will lift out. It also secures your Switch so that any movement there could be is rendered virtually non-existent, and with the soft flap covering your whole screen, it’s protected really well from any frontal impact.
Another nice little detail is on the bottom of the case, which actually has a line art Switch printed on it, just in case you didn’t know where to put it.
One small addition to the case that I would have liked to see would have been a way to use the case as a stand like you can with other cases, as when thinking of an ideal travel case I consider a stand an essential feature. Despite this, it is still a well thought out and practical design.
Summary
The Tonal cases are ideal for anyone who wants smart storage, compact size and a clean look, whilst retaining your favourite little pocket monster, and it’s ideal for travel or even just minimalist storage. Tasteful design and well thought out storage options make this case easy to recommend.
If you use the PDP grips for added comfort, I would recommend one of PDP’s bigger deluxe bundles that accommodate the grips as well, though.
