August to early September is going to be a very busy, and expensive time for JRPG fans. Oninaki, Catherine, Astral Chain and The Legends of Heroes 3 are all coming out within a short period of time, and somewhat concerningly, could drown out the 27th August release of yet another promising action JRPG nestled among them; Crystar.
The premise of the game from the official website:
“For when I weep, then I am strong – A girl named Rei and Mirai, her little sister, are dragged into the afterworld of Purgatory by an unknown entity. Scared and confused, Rei tries to lead them home when they are attacked by a terrible monster. To protect her little sister, Rei unlocks the strength hidden within her. With it, she fights against the dead Souls of Purgatory.
However, this power turns against her. Rei accidently kills Mirai with her very own hands, thinking she is an enemy. Devastated, Rei weeps hopelessly at what she has done. Sensing an opportunity, two Demons appear and whisper in her ear…
“If you hunt the wandering Souls in this world and gift us with the tears of your suffering, we will bring Mirai back to life.”
Rei takes their offer and signs a contract with the Demons. Now an Executor of Purgatory, she sets out on the story that shall again and again plunge her into life-threatening battle. All to save the sister she loves.”
Gorgeous visuals, interesting character designs, fluid looking combat, set around an intriguing storyline. Game Producer, Fuyuki Hayashi, came up with the idea of replicating the feeling of being drawn to shiny things (like stars) at times when you are feeling sad, hence, Cry-Star. So the game looks set to have a deep, thought-provoking story on top of the above, and is, therefore, shaping up to be quite a bit more than “just another JRPG”.
Indeed, the game has already received positive reviews in Japan, and during its opening week back on October 18th 2018, reached number 5 in the highly contested Japanese game chart. Not too shabby for an action JRPG you’ve never heard of.
So, check back with us at Total Gaming Addicts on the 27th August to see if we have been crying with joy over this eagerly anticipated game.
