It seems very weird to not have Playstation make an appearance at the world’s biggest gaming conference, but that hopefully doesn’t mean we won’t see some exclusive titles or something new from them. Playstation’s no show leaves the door wide open for Microsoft and Nintendo to shine, so with that in mind, here are my top 5 things I’d like to see at this years E3 with my guess at the probability of them happening.
Release date and new gameplay for The Last of Us 2 – 100% chance
I have to admit, I found the first Last of Us 2 trailer rather too gruesome and gratuitous – dare I say, shocking for the sake of it? Visual in your face torture from the once family friendly team at Naughty Dog was not expected!
It’s now been a couple of months since we’ve heard anything new about the game and very little visually of Troy Bakers character Joel in any of the details. Maybe some more story elements of Joel and Ellie together are due? The game is slated for Q4 this year so an actual date for the hype train to blow its whistle and stoke those fires should be coming to E3 with a toot toot.
New gameplay and release date of Ghost of Tsushima – 75% chance
For me, the star of the E3 2018 show last year was Ghost of Tsushima. Out of nowhere, the Infamous team at Sucker Punch gave us a massively impressive looking Japanese samurai game trailer, that was as much a marvel for the stunning grassland vistas it showed as it was the intriguing story plot.
Since then however there have been rumours abounding of licencing issues, that the game had been canned and nothing since. It’s been a year and in that time I’ve managed to learn how to spell Tsushima without looking, Sekiro Shadows Die twice has been released, and I’m still disappointed my pre-order from Amazon (other online retailers are available -Ed) for the game still has no indication of when it will be released. The time is now ripe to remind us all over again of why we like Samurai games, especially when Sucker Punch is involved.
Animal Crossing 2019 for the Nintendo Switch – 65% chance
My ten year old daughter is like a stuck record at the moment. When is Animal Crossing coming out? When is Animal Crossing coming out? When is Animal Crossing coming out? One of the biggest DS games still not to have made an appearance on the bigger more powerful Switch has already released a teaser trailer, but very little detail.
It’s been a whopping 8 years since the last game, and frankly fans (and my daughter) are DUE! The time is right for more details here at this year’s E3.
A new Splinter Cell game – 55 % chance
Speaking of DUE! I was thrilled that Sam Fisher made an appearance recently in Ghost Recon Wildlands, as I viewed this as a testing of the waters from Ubisoft as to the popularity of the franchise. Titbits of news are flowing about this from the depressing to the exciting. The depressing being, Ubisoft have admitted no studio wants to take on the responsibility, or have any new ideas for this franchise, to the exciting being a pair of the iconic goggles have been found online in the build up for the hype.
The time is right for the series to make a stand alone game entrance for the current generation, as it’s been 6 years since the last Splinter Cell game. I can already hear the fans whoop and holler at a blank screen that suddenly shows three green dots and plays the iconic electronic sound of goggles being turned on. Please make it happen!
A new James Bond game – 1 % chance
James Bond games have been around for decades. There is a wealth of material to use; the films are still relevant, and they are currently making a new Bond film. So why oh why are Bond fans starved of any recent, decent games? We have been basking in the glow of Golden eye for far too long. Having looked into possible reasons why we’ve not had any new games, licencing issues could be part of it with MGM studios.
If I’m REALLY going to reach for the sky here, we know that team 1 at Naughty Dog are working on The Last of Us II – how amazing would it be if Team 2 were working on a new Bond game? Yes pigs can fly, and I’m in dreamland right now but hey, if you don’t ask!
