Bland, Uninspiring and Boring.
It’s not often I don’t gel with Sim management games of any type and as a golf fan I was really looking forward to playing Resort Boss: Golf .
Initially it’s quite interesting, playing in a restricted space with limited funds and nothing but a small car park on your plot You set off following the simple tutorial which does guide you through well leaving little in the way of questions afterwards.
Holes are simple to build with good analytics throughout displaying distances and trajectory and it is easy to get started using the block system to place grass, rough, sand and all the other simple wonders that make putting a ball in a hole so difficult. Raise and lower terrain, adding lakes and rivers accordingly and there you have it. Similar systems are used for creating the buildings; select a plot size, determine how many floors it will have and select the type of roof and walls you want, then add varying windows and doors and you’re done. Pretty simple really but like anything simple, it’s the creative additions you add that gives them style and character, be it modern, contemporary, traditional or perhaps a bit of everything.
Pop your first building like a restaurant, hotel or staff clubhouse and you’re away.
Once your resort is made, guests arrive and play the beautiful holes you have created, applications for memberships will come flooding in and you will soon be making enough cash to expand your resort. Unfortunately this gameplay loop feels very rinse and repeat, expand your grounds, build again and again but nothing really grabbed my interest as these things were so simple to do. I wasn’t making millions but I was comfortable enough to not have long waits to get more structures and holes in place. Even when I pushed the boundaries of the holes (very long yard holes) it just didn’t have that spark that made me want to continue playing. You can add trees and other more decorative elements to give a more authentic course but I found it more packing than optimal placement that affected the holes. You can play a round of your course yourself but there seems to be no ball roll and it’s not enjoyable, it’s just too easy despite making holes hard and winding with obstacles. I’d rather play golf clash on my mobile than this.
Visually, even at ultra graphics settings, it needs a lot of polishing. The colours are too pastel and flat, giving even less reason to get excited about playing. Despite adding reds, blues and other colours into my resort nothing felt inspiring.
Hills and lower terrain are just pointed peaks and troughs and even though on a few occasions it came together well, it left me feeling like there were only a few options for great looking and balanced holes that gave players difficulty and enjoyment to continue coming to my resort.
Sounds are your usual sim management low, inoffensive tones and don’t impact too much, all other in game sounds are limited.
The depth of the game does go right down to player suggestions and comments about your resort for you to react to, however it was very limited at best and pretty much told me what I already knew – that a hole was too easy or too hard, or there was not enough change in the course. When you have designed it to be that way, it makes you feel like kicking the players and saying “get off my resort you ungrateful little players”.
SUMMARY
Visually uninspiring, repetitive and boring. With a bit more colour and polish this would be well suited as a mobile game but as a sim management game on PC many will find it lacking.
