Improved frame rates, higher resolution, faster loading and ray tracing features coming to PS5 and Xbox Series S|X
Deep Silver and 4A Games have announced that Metro Exodus will be getting a heap of major enhancements.
The Metro series has always been at the bleeding edge when it comes to technical performance. Taxing on all but the most powerful PCs, consoles have had to make do with a heavily downgraded version to run on their systems. It has generally been several years after the original release, when consoles have had a chance to catch up a bit, that titles like Metro Redux have brought improved performance to console players.
In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Metro series, 4A Games and Deep Silver are giving all current and future owners of the excellent Metro Exodus a free upgrade for the Gen 9 Xbox and PlayStation systems. A firm release date hasn’t been announced yet, but seeing as these are upgrades and not a whole game rebuild it hopefully won’t be long until console gamers can experience Metro Exodus in all of its ray-traced, super-smooth glory.

New Metro game in development
As if news of a significant update to the graphics of Metro Exodus wasn’t exciting enough, 4A games and new studio partners Sabre Interactive have announced that there is another Metro game in the development phase.
A huge game engine overhaul is underway to leverage the power of the new systems’ faster SSDs, CPUs, GPUs and ray-tracing capabilities.
The partnership with Sabre Interactive (who will be responsible for the next-gen update for The Witcher 3), will also allow Metro to explore multiplayer concepts that will allow players a new way of experiencing the Metro universe.
There’s always the concern that studios will just tack on some bog-standard multiplayer game modes, but the fact they have brought in a whole extra studio with a pedigree in online gaming gives me hope it could be something far more substantial. Just not another Battle Royale, please.
“…our partnership with Saber will allow us to explore something that has always been an ambition for 4A Games, but something we have never been able to commit to until now: a multiplayer experience in the Metro universe.”
“We know some of our fans have concerns whenever they hear multiplayer mentioned, so we wanted to tackle this topic head on and talk about some of goals and principles behind this early exploration.
Let’s start by saying, we hear your concerns. We’re not looking at multiplayer as a box-ticking exercise, or to jump on some trend or bandwagon. As creators, we want to explore a multiplayer experience that makes complete sense in the Metro universe.
We’re also committed to ensuring that whatever we do, it’s not to the detriment of our single-player ambitions. We’ll need a dedicated team focused solely on the online component, and this is what our new partnership with Saber can bring; years of expertise, technology, and know-how to help us realise our ambitions.
Additionally, a reminder that it’s still early days – none of the thoughts above mean that the next Metro game will be multiplayer only; or that the next game will have single and multi-player in the same package. We are still figuring things out, but know that we are absolutely committed to more single-player, story driven experiences in the Metro universe that our fans have come to know and love.”
It’s good to see they have their finger on the pulse of what fans want, and this news is equal parts reassuring and exciting.
