Where to start, If you’re like me and you enjoyed the other games in the Ghost Recon series like Future Soldier & Advanced Warfighter 2 you will enjoy Wildlands, as it merges the open world gameplay of Farcry & GTA with fluid game play of the previous Ghost Recon games.
So first off as I’m suse you’re all wondering, the level design is simple stunning when you turn the HUD off it feels like you’re watching a 1080p film. Not seen it it in 4K but I’m sure it’s even better.
The map design is varied from small towns to wide open fields, farmland to rolling hills. To further enhance the experience there are AI locals selling food by the side of the road, working the fields and just going about their business.
A big plus of Wildlands is the fact can pick and choose the missions you do and the order you do them (for the most part) the build up to the underbosses and bosses are good fun and do provide a challenge with some great variation on the missions., for example secure the area & hold it for 3 minutes or “stealthy” (or if you me parachute into a crowd of cartel and well you know the rest) infiltrate the area and extract a VIP…
You can pick and choose how you play all the missions as well. If you like running and gunning and making as much noise as possible or if you like air dropping in at night and only taking out key targets and sneaking out Splinter Cell style you can. So it appeals to all game play styles.
The Dialog between your AI teammates is very immersive and funny at times. They tell jokes about previous deployments they have been on and other life stories. This really deepens the story and makes you feel like they are a true life team.
Don’t worry if you thinking “I hate third person shooters” Wildlands has you covered with the press of a button you can flick to first person and play the whole game like this.
The level of customisation is amazing! From the look of your character and a llama shirts to ghillie suit. Not to mention the millions (ok maybe not millions) of gunsmith customisation’s like scopes to different triggers to a sea of gun skins. You really can create the gun that works best for you. It’s the level of gun customisation you want in Rainbow Six Siege to make it complete! There are “exotic” named guns like you get in the Division, there guns have a specific talent/perk but these guns are not customisable in any way…
Co Op in the last Ghost Recon games was good but you had to start the game in a lobby and you had to invite the others players in, but in Wildlands you can drop in and out of friends and non-friends games (if they have their game open) and for the most part it’s seamless. Don’t panic, there is still a lobby if you like waiting for your friends to join and start together…
The only real thing that lets down all the Ghost Recon games and Wildlands is no different is your AI teammates who seem to be of no use whatsoever, you issue an order to “move over there” and you get a “moving” response and yet nothing there all still behind you… you ask them to “regroup on me” and again you get a “moving” (or similar response) and they just sit there looking at you, so if you’re playing solo do not expect much from you AI team in fact you’re going to have to do all the heavy lifting.
The only time the AI team are good is when you’re in a car or chopper and you order an assault and you pull-up or fly right in front of a group of cartel members and they then do all they can to end them… get of of the vehicle and it’s like they forgot that they were doing and just stand there in some cases or just hide while you’re taking all the fire because you’re still pushing for the objective.
The cutscenes are works of art and are all really engaging like mini films. The Intel you collect also unlocks FMV’s that even further expand the game’s back story and if you’re like me and forget who’s who and what’s what you can watch them as much or as little as you like.
