A little over 2 years ago i reviewed an amazing set of PC headphones The Elite PRO from Turtle Beach, here we are in 2018 with the new Turtle Beach Elite Atlas and at nearly half the cost there there is no doubt from myself that many gamers will be snapping them up.
Firstly they look amazing, little to no accent pieces to they are as stealthy looking as they could be bar the metal headband (don’t worry they are well covered beneath)
Full black ear cups with only the turtle beach logo and Elite printed on the sides you could forgive people for not even realising they are Turtle Beach.
Large ear cup cushions blend almost seamlessly to the headband frame with just a slim accent piece between them making this one of my favourite looking headsets.
Wires wires wires, my biggest pet hate on headsets, you’ll see from my other headset reviews I favour wireless over wires any day, however the Elite Atlas and technology over the past couple of years has moved on greatly so now the Elite Atlas not only does PC, but also Xbox, Playstation Nintendo Switch and mobile with just 1 wire (unless you require a mic on PC where you will need to use the included splitter) This is brilliant and makes them far greater in useability for gamers as well as music lovers on mobile as there is no need for some beats headphones in addition to your Elite Atlas.
Comfort, a huge part of many gamers headset choice, well no worries there, the thick but flexible headband offers an ample cushion on your head (sorry spiky hair will still be flattened) the ear cups as previously mentioned are nice and thick however they are not loose either so Turtle Beach have scored the perfect balance there.
The inline volume control is well positioned as well with a ample sized mute button for the mic and although it does feel a little cheap it should still stand the test of time.
This is connected to a nice braided wire that thus far has not caused any issues.
The mic itself is also really impressive, a flexible wire is surrounded by a sleek design housing that has a pro design mic featuring TruSpeak technology an on all formats I tried (skype, discord etc) I cannot fault it, all feedback given to me confirmed that this is one of the clearest mics Turtle Beach has produced ever.
So the real reason we all buy headsets how do they sound and perform under various conditions?
Put simply the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas are an outstanding piece of kit with premium 50mm Speakers. Yes this is nothing new and no you cannot expect to play Drum and Bass low hz frequencies at full volume without some distortion (i do try it on all headsets) but the general use of the headset for game chat, in game music and sounds it performed extremely well. Now I’m no expert in the different performances of sound over the years from Dolby, DTS, Sonic and I’m sure there have been many more but what I can say is that of the many headsets I have reviewed over the years this is the clearest headset ona broad spectrum that I have used.
In part you have to bear in mind build quality, cushion depth to allow the sound some movement to your ear and how the speaker can produce depth from that but you’ve also just got to hand it to the technical sound engineers over at Turtle Beach for producing a excellent sound quality at a very affordable price given the broadness of the headsets offering.
SUMMARY
Coming in at £89.99 on release date and being for use on so many platforms the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas is the only headset you’ll ever need.
Build quality, Performance sound quality with comfort built in, what more do you need.
