As a preview member I love getting the latest innovations, and having preview games is always a bonus. But for the most part its to get the dashboard we all deserved and expected back in November 2013 when our beloved Xbox One was launched.
Below you can click on each year to see the updates and their features over the past 3 years.
We have only included full release updates not the current preview updates.

Video playback directly in the Xbox One Activity Feed
- We’ve made improvements to video playback in the Xbox One Activity Feed.
- Play an entire video inline rather than having to leave your feed to launch it.
- You can ‘like’ the video while previewing it by pressing X.
- New pause, restart, and full-screen playback options for when you choose to launch a video from your Activity Feed.
Xbox Elite Wireless Controller improved thumbstick precision with firmware update
- We heard from fans that you wanted to see improvements to the behavior of the thumbsticks on the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller, particularly when you are moving the thumbsticks diagonally. Based on this feedback, we’ve created a new method to calculate the position of the thumbsticks consistently, enabling thumbstick response that is more in line with what you are expecting. This method measures and uses the distance of the thumbstick position relative to the center focus point of the thumbstick base, instead of the standard method, which calculates the measurement using a two-dimensional plane. With the latest firmware update, you can expect increased accuracy of the thumbsticks on your Xbox Elite Wireless Controller for even greater control.

Dedicated servers for party chat
- Xbox is introducing dedicated party chat relay servers to help solve the issues around NAT traversal that have prevented some people from being able to use party chat.
- The party chat system will monitor the NAT types of users in the party. If conflicts arise due to Strict or Moderate NAT types, the system will automatically move the hosting services to the Xbox cloud in an attempt to resolve the NAT type conflicts. For information on NAT types, go to Network settings on Xbox One.
User-selectable power mode

WOW an astounding 29 updates in 3 years
In 933 days since launch we got an update every 32 days, ranging from minor bug fixes to Xbox TV, Twitch TV, friends updates and more recently the full dashboard overhaul.
There is not doubt on Microsoft’s commitment to improving the dashboard and making the user experience better but have we got back to where we were with the Xbox 360 yet?
Many of us were disappointed with the first Xbox One dashboard, slow and cumbersome but also the lack of features and shortcuts to improve the user experience.
Simple interactions suck as sending an invite by pressing the X button to send an invite have only been added recently and with all this new power of the next generation I think we all expected more.
The latest preview update brings the games catalogue a much needed update.
Firstly they have put it up the top so you dont have to scroll around, but its inside where the magic happens.
Options to now sort and adjust are:
- Sort A-Z
- Sort by Letter
- Sort by last used
- Sort by last update
- Sort by size
- Small tiles
- Medium tiles
- Large tiles
- Internal storage
- External storage (HDD)
- All storage
In addition to this the ability to see how many games you have installed, apps installed and how many games are ready to install adds to the overall improvement in visibility of you beloved titles.
We will all have our favourite view and size but again is this not just what should have been here in the first place?
Where are custom groups?
I know we can pin tiles to our dashboard but that’s the only customisation to layout we have on our homescreen.
Hey Cortana, nice to see you on my xbox, hows the Chief?
Well this chief is not impressed so far, “Xbox record that” fast and simple but no after 3 years it’s now “hey cortana record that” Go ahead say it outloud a few times. I appreciate that cortana should solve a lot of problems such and simply saying “xbox has launched….” and being taken to the games screen mid way through your hot lap, and that’s great BUT again why can’t we have the choice? Mobile phones offer the choice of how to initiate voice commands.
For me after 3 years of development the Dashboard is where it should have been. we have has hundreds of tweaks and improvements and they are all more than welcome.
I commend Microsoft on their commitment, but now its time to push the boundaries and give us Dashboards we can create ourselves, customise beyond basic colour and pins and create our own “homepages”
